Imagine you meet someone new — a therapist, a teacher, a manager, or even a close friend — and something about them feels familiar. Maybe the way they speak reminds you of a parent. You may not consciously think of that connection. But emotionally, your brain quietly maps old experiences onto new ones.

In modern therapy, transference is not treated like something to eliminate. Instead, it is seen as information.

When a client feels strongly toward the therapist — positively or negatively — it can reveal:

  • what safety feels like to them

  • how trust is built or lost
  • what emotional needs may not have been fully met

The goal is not to interpret everything as “about the past,” but to gently notice:
“Where else have I felt this way?”
